Eveready Igniting a Light in the Birches Children’s School

Date : 27 June 2016

For the 5thyear in a row, Eveready is proud to have donated 150 black and yellow torches with batteries for each child doing the Eveready Torch Walk, at The Birches pre-primary school.

Birches is a pre-primary school situated in Pinetown, Durban and they are an Eco-school. The school was established in 1976 with the focus on not only building and developing the minds of young children, but also teaching them the importance of conservation, climate change, recycling and many more environmentally friendly practices.

On Thursday the 2 June, when the Birches school hosted their annual Eveready Torch walk, in order to raise funds for their school. Scilla Edmonds the school’s principal explained how they were blessed with beautiful weather and to make the evening extra special, they were also celebrating their schools 40th Anniversary.

Schilla expressed how "ten years ago – we changed the usual walk during the day into something very special for our children, with a thrill of an evening walk by torchlight. This has become our most popular event of the year! Eveready have just made it ‘work’ for our Eco-school, not only by helping us acquire 150 odd torches of the same kind, but because of their amazing ENERGY SAVING reputation.”

This year the Eveready Torch Walk raised an incredible R34 000, despite the financial climate. Schilla expressed how "she is very grateful for the community who pull together by providing us with sponsorships and participation. We would also like to express our gratitude for Eveready’s help, as without it, we would never have achieved such a successful event”.
